Biography Kris Verex [Subground FM, Germany]

Born and raised in Vienna, relocated in the mid 80´s with his family to Germany, Kris Verex
grew up with the musical influences of his grandfather, a church organist, and his mother who
played the piano as well as the flute. Thus Kris got very early into music in general and started
with piano lessons at the age of 7 years. He basically took classic lessons, but over the years his
interests applied more into playing rhythm & blues as well as jazz. At that time he already
discovered his feelings for soulful music and in so doing he was inspired during the 80’s by
famous artists such as Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gave, Soul II Soul, Gary Moore and many more.
In the early 90s, Kris got more and more into electronic music. Fascinated by the sound of
electronic beats, especially kicks and baselines, he needed to buy his first records in 1992. After
one year of so called musical orientation in various styles he finally found his love in house
music in 1993. For him already there was the absorbing combination of music styles he preferred,
like Blues, Soul, Funk and Disco together with the electronic side of music. This introduction to
House Music changed his entire life, wherefore he has embraced soulful deephouse music ever
since.

Kris started life as a DJ in 1993 and had his first official gig at a local venue with 500 people in
an assembly hanger. He was by now playing a variety of private parties during 1994 and 1995.
During this time he also started with his first guest-appearences at local non-commercial
radiostations in the south of Germany. In 1995 Kris entered the local club scene with the help and
introduction of Basti Schwarz (a part of Tiefschwarz), at that time resident of the highly
acquainted Red Dog Club in Stuttgart, where many famous artists like Tony Humphries, Larry
Heard, Masters at Work, Frankie Feliciano, Mike Dunn et al. had been guests over the years.
His first residency came in 1996 at the club ‘Radio Bar’ for approximately 2 years. Throughout
1997 and 1998, he also played regularly at venues like ‘Pauls Boutique’, had several gigs at ‘M1-
The Club’, the ‘Marlboro Breakfast Club’ as local support as well as the ‘Depot Club’ in
Tubingen. During this time, Kris started with his first own weekly radio show live on air at the
non-commercial radio station SF 97,5FM. From 1997 to 2000 every Thursday night, 9 p.m. until
midnight CET, was the live broadcast of ‘Houseaffaires’ on air. Nearly all local Deejays and
Residents of the metropolitan area of Stuttgart had been guests at Kris’ radio show.
In 1999 Kris started hosting his monthly deephouse celebration at the ‘Stereo Club’ for more than
1 year. His so called ‘Freetown Parties’ were well known throughout the area and his love for
quality deep house music was expressed every night through his skillful Djing. In 2000 there
were many changes and new directions, and in order to keep this underground alive besides the
strong commercial club scene, Kris moved at the end of 2000 to Stuttgart.
In the early summer of 2001, it was the natal-hour of ‘Subground FM’ with the plan to to build
up a new radio show, live on air as well as on the net to promote the positive vibe of deephouse
& garage music worldwide. It took over half a year, to realize all ideas, manage everything with
the local radio station FRS 97.2FM and to design the Subground FM website. At the end of 2001
was the first live broadcast of Subground FM friday nights from 10 to 11 p.m. CET. Since then
Subground FM got more and more listeners each month and is now one of the favorite deephouse
radio shows around, both on air and on the net with online visitors from over 70 different
countries all over the world.

At the beginning of 2002 Kris also took up a new residency at the new trendy club ’Barcode
Lounge’ in Stuttgart and restarted spinning at local underground club parties. As 3rd Place
Winner of the Hithouse Radio DJ Competition in all styles in spring 2002 with his smooth
dynamic deep house mix, he also appeared on Hithouse Saturday Night Mastermix Radio Show
in summer 2002 together with Bernie Bernthaler. Further guestmixes has induced Kris to his
latest appearance, where his mix was broadcasted live all over Germany on Jam FM with the
support of Lars Behrenroth in winter 2002.
Kris is a person, who ‘grooves’ into the people when he plays, in order to fill people with
enthusiasm and keep them deeply enjoying the music. Or to say it in his own words: ‘If I see
people dancing around me, while they keep on smiling with this kind of special glitter in their
eyes and sometimes they close their eyes, its just the greatest thing to feel this energy inside the
club. Everytime it´s a wonderful feeling which I would like to give back as often as I can.’ Close
Friends and people he work with already call him an ‘exceptional soulful deejay talent with deep
influences’. With many plans for the future like producing music, organizing parties and of
course Djing as much as possible everywhere, Kris will enter the next years in order to share his
understanding of deep soulful underground house with other people all over the whole world.

It’s all about music!
